EU ushes for chat control: What does this mean for your privacy?

One development currently stands out: The European Union is working on a proposal for mandatory chat control, and the majority of member states appear to be in favor.
What is chat control?
Chat control means that the content of your private messages – such as WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram chats – is automatically scanned for certain keywords or images. What began as a measure against child abuse now threatens to become a broad surveillance instrument.
Since July 1, Denmark has taken over the EU presidency and immediately introduced a much stricter proposal. This plan requires all chat services to scan messages – not only for already known illegal content but even for potentially new data. In short: nothing remains private.
Where does Europe stand?
According to Patrick Breyer, Member of the European Parliament from Germany’s Pirate Party, a majority of fifteen EU countries are now in favor of introducing this form of digital control. The Netherlands, Austria, and Poland are currently the only countries that have explicitly remained opposed or neutral.
What is worrying: Even countries that previously voted against have not yet taken a position on the new, stricter proposal. On 14 October 2025, the EU will vote on this issue.
What are the chances?
An EU legislative proposal is adopted if at least 15 member states vote in favor and those countries together represent 65% of the EU population.
Why is this important?
For everyone who values freedom, privacy, and independence. If governments gain access to your private conversations, a line will be crossed that is difficult to reverse.
